LA GALA FLAMENCA - NOVEMBER 16, 2023

Imagine yourself in Spain, the birthplace of a singular art known around the world for its passion, ...you're wandering toward a place for dinner. First, you hear, in the distance, intense poetic singing, then exotic interweaving of guitar harmonies and melodies given a thunderous rhythmic vitality by the incredibly virtuosic footwork of the dancer. As you enter the cantina the enticing aromas of tapas and paella fills the air. First, a little wine as you find your table. Then, the evening really begins with Spanish food, wine, poetry, music, dance, the spectacle of FLAMENCO. You experience everything close-up, surrounded by it, the way it emerged into the world: raw, intemperate, on fire, a feast for senses and the soul.

Flamenco is both groundbreaking and traditional. From its birth in Spain long ago, it has made an impact across the globe especially in the last 50 years. Great masters of this art have established its characteristics while new generations continually add new elements which personalize and update the style. It is an artform of intense and joyous depth that brings together driving rhythms, powerful dance, phenomenal guitar playing, intense song, and heartfelt poetry. There is a definable pulse to these presentations. A Flamenco experience is never simple or mundane. Every part of the dance, music, and poetry, whether joyous or tragic, is meant to be experienced at the very core of our emotions. Flamenco ranges from spontaneous performance  outbursts at a gathering in a Spanish home to beloved local artists performing for community to cutting-edge productions that fill the concert halls all over the world. The combination of all these elements produces a particular kind of vibrance known as duende, the spirit behind human expression and the passionate soul of the art form itself.
